We prefer biomass energy more than other energy sources because it is an inexhaustible energy source, we can get it from anywhere, and it helps socio-economic developments in rural areas.


Sources of Biomass


The main sources of biomass are algae, herbs, trees, specially grown plants such as wheat and corn, animal droppings, fertilizer, industrial wastes, algae in the sea, all organic waste from the home (for example, fruit, vegetable waste, residues). The primary reason for a less preference for energy sources such as oil and natural gas is that they are difficult and scarce. The secondary reason is that some people protested because of environmental pollution.


Technologies of Biomass Energy


We get heat, fuel production, and electricity from biomass sources. We use biochemical and Thermo-chemical methods for energy production.


Biomass Conversion Methods



Direct Burning Technologies:


The most widely known and used feature is the direct burning of biomass resources. The principal components of this process are steam boilers that produce steam under high temperature and pressure, and the turbines produce electricity from this steam. With this method, electricity and heat energy can be created at the same time, it has the feature of working with the principle of the cogeneration system.


Gasification


Gasification is a method in which we get synthesis gas from biomass with a Thermo-chemical method, and it is another technology that we use today. The carbon (C) content biomass source is burned with the introduction of limited oxygen to the gasification chamber. With this process, we can convert approximately 85% of the biomass energy into the gas.


pyrolysis


Pyrolysis, one of the gasification methods, is the conversion of biomass sources into unique energy forms by heating between 400 degrees and 650 degrees in an oxygen-free environment. This process produces low cost and easily transportable (60%) bio-oil, (20%) flammable gas, and (20%) biochar. Bio-oil is a very useful fuel because of its reusability, easy portability, and low cost after production.


Anaerobic Digestion


Anaerobic digestion, which is a biochemical technology, is the digestion of organic matter by microorganisms in an oxygen-free environment.


Combustion of Biomass and Fossil Fuels (Co-firing)


This method is one of the most economical energy production methods. It is the case of mixing and using biomass resources together with coal. We can also use the Co-firing method of indirect combustion and gasification systems.


 Pros of Biomass Energy


1) It is more environmentally friendly than other energy sources and emits less CO2, SOX, NOX.

2) It contributes to the prevention of environmental problems by obtaining biogas from waste biomass sources or by direct combustion methods.

3) We can use it as a domestic energy source for countries.


4) Production plants are less costly than many power plants.


Cons of Biomass Energy


1) we should select the products as a biomass source in such a way that no food problem occurs.

2) If we use these products as a biomass source that comes from fertile soil, we should consider these products first to use as food.
